Important Properties of Gaskets


In bolted flange connection systems, gasket performance directly affects sealing reliability. As a core parameter of the system, gasket stress plays a decisive role in sealing performance. In this issue, we will introduce relevant content about gasket stress.

Gasket stress, namely the compressive stress acting on the gasket, plays a core and key role in determining the sealing performance of the connection. In fact, only a part of the stress generated by the initial bolt load acting on the gasket is closely related to leak control, while the remaining part must be used to resist the thrust generated by fluid static pressure on the ends of pipes or containers.

 

Specifically, fluid static pressure will form an outward thrust on the ends of pipes or containers, and a part of the gasket stress needs to counteract this thrust to maintain connection stability.

Therefore, in high-pressure applications, most of the initial bolt load will be offset by this thrust. This is because when the pressure is extremely high, the thrust generated by fluid static pressure on the ends of pipes or containers becomes very large, and a large part of the initial bolt load must be used to balance this thrust.

However, when the fluid pressure has not yet acted, the gasket has to bear a high bolt load. Such excessive load may exceed the bearing capacity of the gasket, resulting in damage to the gasket.

Therefore, for joints of different sizes, even if the same type of gasket is used, their applicable working pressure ranges are different. Joints of different sizes have differences in structure, stress conditions, etc., so the pressure that the same type of gasket can bear on joints of different sizes also varies.
